AUTHOR ENCOURAGES "GOD UPGRADE"
"It's time to upgrade your concept of God," says Rabbi Jamie Korngold.
Rabbi Korngold will explain how to "get the upgrade" at a program at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, at Temple Israel in Charleston. The Temple's Rabbi Jim Cohn says, "People of all faiths, or no faith, are welcome."
"We insist on upgrades for our computer software," says Cohn. "Nobody would use AOL 1.0 to send email in 2012. Rabbi Korngold invites us to take the same approach in how we think about our religion."
Korngold says that her own religious stumbling block came when she admitted to herself that her rational mind "just couldn't buy into a God in the sky who writes down our deeds and rewards and punishes us accordingly."
That's when she researched and wrote a book, The God Upgrade, which describes how Jewish concepts of God have changed over the centuries. "By upgrading our God concept to one that is aligned with our modern sensibilities, the result is a Judaism that is both meaningful and accessible."
Cohn says that his congregation's progressive attitude and "natural curiosity" made Korngold's visit a logical choice for his Temple's Enrichment Committee. A dedicated group at the Temple has been exploring her book in detail since October.
"We've enjoyed Rabbi Korngold's intellectual honesty and sense of humor," says Cohn, "as we've journeyed from the earliest ideas of God to some of the most influential modern theologies."
Cohn adds that the active involvement of non-Jewish participants in the year-long book discussion shows that Korngold's May 3 visit "will be of interest to people of all religious orientations."
Rabbi Korngold is an ordained Reform rabbi and the founder and executive director of the Adventure Rabbi Program, based in Boulder, Colorado. She is nationally recognized for her innovative work combining religion and nature. A favorite of the media, she has been featured by Good Morning America, National Geographic, NPR, and the New York Times.
