Charleston's Black Ministerial Alliance Installs First Female President

The Charleston Black Ministerial Alliance, Inc. will sponsor an Installation Service
and Celebration of newly elected officers on Saturday, May 5, 4:00 p.m. at Grace Bible
Church, 600 Kanawha Boulevard W, where Rev. Matthew Watts is Pastor.

After four decades of service to the Charleston community and Greater Kanawha
Valley, this celebration marks a historic moment. Rev. Roberta Smith, Pastor of
Shaffer A.M.E. church will be installed as the Alliance's sixth President but the
first female pastor to hold this office. Member pastors, ministers and friends are
expected to honor the significance of this event by wearing their clerical attire. The
service is open to the public.

This event signals a significant milestone in the history of the CBMA. Rev. Paul
Gilmer, the Founding President of the CBMA from 1967-68, also served as
Charleston's first Black Fire Chief. His successor, Dr. James Perkins, initiated the
first Martin Luther King birthday celebration in the Kanawha Valley. His successor, Dr.
Braxton Broady, Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist on Charleston's Westside also served as its
elected representative on the City Council. When Rev. Emanuel Heyliger, Pastor of the
Ferguson Memorial Baptist in West Dunbar became CBMA's fourth President, he
initiated the Covenant Program in partnership with One Valley Bank (now BB&T) to
promote economic empowerment in the African-American community. It was also
during his tenure that the CBMA welcomed Rev. Roberta Smith and other women
ministers into the organization.

For the past eight years Rev. Dr. Lloyd Allan Hill has led the CBMA in responding to the
needs of youth in our community and has demonstrated vigilant passion to make
neighborhoods a safer place to live. As Rev. Hill passes the Presidential torch to Rev.
Roberta Smith, he commends the Alliance for it courageous choice of "the first woman
to lead the organization which speaks to the growth and maturity of the CBMA".
