St. Paul Lutheran Church

1423 Lee Street, East

Charleston WV

On behalf of the people of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charleston, we are extending a cordial invitation to you and each member of your congregation to attend two special events on the afternoon of Sunday, April 3, 2011.

The Madison Gospel Quartet will be providing a concert, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The concert will be followed by a "Spring Fair Trade Bazaar."

The Madison Gospel Quartet under the direction of Steve Smarr provides Gaither-style vocal band music. The group's repertoire includes music from well-known gospel groups such as Legacy 5, The Gaither Vocal Band, as well as Southern Gospel favorites.

The Madison Gospel Quartet has been in existence since the early 1980's.   Members have changed over this time, but have always been members from the United Methodist Church in Madison,  W. Va.

Over the years the quartet has recorded several CD's and has performed for several churches in the area as well as performing for Charleston's New Year's Eve "Goodnight" for the past several years.

Spring Bazaar – Handcrafted Fair Trade Items, Fair Trade Coffee and Chocolate

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Good Gifts and Lutheran World Relief Fair Trade Gift programs provide a multitude of items that makes it fun and convenient to support God's work.  Handcrafted Easter gift items, jewelry, baskets, pottery, scarves in addition to coffee and chocolate will be for sale.  By purchasing these products, you are supporting craftsmen and giving them an opportunity to be self sufficient and have a decent quality of life.

Please note: This is not a fund-raising event for St. Paul.

For more information, please contact the church office at 304.343.1647 or event coordinator Janet Richards at 304.343.9355.

I would deeply appreciate it if you would pass this invitation on to the people of your congregation on the next two weekends.

Religion and the death penalty

"Religion and the Law"

Temple Israel

2312 Kanawha Blvd. East

Charleston WV 25311

Eyewitness testimony, the death penalty, and the right to remain silent

(with Public Defender George Castelle and Rabbi Jim Cohn)

Wednesday, March 30, 7:00-8:30 pm

Do our eyes and ears deceive us? The question is not merely an abstraction.  A person's life can depend on how certain we are of what we think we've seen and heard.  Should a person's life depend on that certainty (or lack of it)?

Life is complicated when it comes to who gets sentenced to death, and who doesn't – and why. Just ask the people convicted of murder on the perjured testimony of now-deceased West Virginia forensic witness Fred Zain.

The rabbis of the Talmud anticipated this problem, and warned us about it.

Highlighting the complexities of Jewish history in this area, Rabbi Cohn says, "Maybe that's why there no death penalty in Israel.  But wait, there is.  But no one has ever been executed in Israel.  But wait, Eichmann was.  But wait, he was the only one.  But wait, no he wasn't. Isn't it interesting how modern Israeli law is based on Jewish law? Oh wait.  No, it isn't.

Freedom, discrimination, and hate crimes –  a tour of the legal thickets

(with Civil Rights Division Deputy Attorney General Paul Sheridan)

Wednesday, March 23, 7:00-8:30 pm

How sacred is our freedom of religious observance? Is the spectrum of protected belief and action infinitely broad, or does it have limits? When does the majority justly curtail the freedoms of a minority?

Is a "non-denominational" prayer at the start of the public school day legal, if it's composed and read by a student?

Is a swastika drawn on the door of a temple or synagogue a hate crime?  What if it's ordinary gang graffiti that's spray-painted on the door?  Are the crimes different, and should the punishments be different?

We know that hate exists, and we know that crime exists.  But what – exactly – is a "hate crime?"

Eyewitness testimony, the death penalty, and the right to remain silent

(with Public Defender George Castelle)

Wednesday, March 30, 7:00-8:30 pm

JEWS AND CHRISTIANS; PASSOVER AND THE LAST SUPPER; EVANGELICALS AND ISRAEL

"CHARTING OUR WAYS

Modern Jews Engage the New Testament --

Enhancing Our Well-Being in a Christian Environment

Friday, April 1, 7:30 pm

at Temple Israel's Sabbath Eve Worship Service

Despite the impact of Christianity on Jewish history, Jews avoid learning the underlying "dynamics" of Christianity and the New Testament — thereby leaving Christian friends perplexed as to why Jews are wary of the "Good News." But modern Jews and Christians face the possibility of an unprecedented and therefore historic change of course. Can an honest, probing understanding of the processes by which Gospel texts arose resolve tension and controversy between Christians and Jews when they develop today? The topic is the title of Dr. Cook's new book, accessible alike to novices, scholars and clergy with innovative teaching-aids making it an invaluable resource for educators and temple/synagogue or church adult-education courses.  This program will also explain why Jews are targeted more than other non-Christians by missionary groups.

Passover, the Last Supper, and Church Seders

Saturday, April 2, 2:30 pm

Jesus' Last Supper and crucifixion are associated in the New Testament with the Jewish festival of Passover.  Many contemporary Christians seek to understand the roots of their own religion by experiencing a Passover seder "as it was experienced in Jesus' time."  Was the Last Supper a seder?  The answer will surprise not only Christians, but also Jews; and this answer is to be found in the cataclysmic transformation of First-Century Judaism that resulted not only in the birth of Christianity, but also in the birth of modern Judaism.

Evangelicals & the State of Israel

Sunday, April 3, 1:30 pm

Support of Israel leads many Jews to a common cause with evangelical Christians who share in that support.  What are the challenges associated with that common cause?  How do concepts like the Rapture and the Antichrist help form Evangelical attitudes toward Jews and Israel? How have relations between Jews and mainline Protestant organizations, with whom Jews often share domestic agendas, been impacted by the views of each toward Israel?  This program will show that, just as American Jews have diverse views about the future of the Middle East, so do American evangelists.

MICHAEL J. COOK, Ph.D., is the Sol and Arlene Bronstein Professor of Judaeo-Christian Studies at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Cincinnati Campus.  He is the only rabbi in America with a Full-Professorial Chair in New Testament.

His major new book is Modern Jews Engage the New Testament: Enhancing Jewish Well-Being in a Christian Environment (Woodstock, VT: Jewish Lights, 2008; 414 pp.).

In 2003, he was one of the seven scholars selected by the Catholic Secretariat for Interreligious and Ecumenical Affairs to assess the accuracy of the advance script of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ."  It was Gibson's reaction to the Scholars' Report that generated much of the ensuing controversy over the film.

He did his undergraduate work at Haverford College, specializing in classical history and early church literature.  He was awarded Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year and graduated magna cum laude.  After study at Hebrew University, Jerusalem, he earned an M.A. in Hebrew Literature, and Ordination, at New York's branch of HUC-JIR (1970).  His doctoral work, at Cincinnati's campus, focused on the Second Temple period and concentrated on New Testament.

His membership in scholarly organizations has included the Society of Biblical Literature, the Association for Jewish Studies, and the Council of Centers on Jewish-Christian Relations.  He has served on the Joint Commission on Interreligious Affairs (Central Conference of American Rabbis, Union for Reform Judaism, and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion).  He has received an "Excellence in Teaching Award" sponsored by the Greater Cincinnati Consortium of Colleges and Universities.
