Fwd: letter for possible distribution

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Susan Latimer <slatimer@stjohnswv.org>
Date: Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 4:11 PM
Subject: letter for possible distribution
To: Sky Kershner <skykershner@gmail.com>, Sky Kershner <sky@kpcc.com>

Dear Sky,

I know that not everyone in CARLA will be interested or willing to participate in this advocacy work, as there are many perspectives one can take on the issues surrounding abortion.   I may not make it tomorrow a.m. to the meeting, although I will try.   If it is possible to send this notice by e-mail to the list, please do.  If this is not the kind of thing that gets sent to the CARLA list,  I understand.  Thank you!

Dear West Virginia Clergy Person,

As the West Virginia legislative session nears, it is clear that once again reproductive health issues will be front and center.

In particular we know that there are  many policymakers gearing up to drastically reduce critical funding for needed abortion care.

As clergy, you know better than anyone how important it is that that clergy and communities of faith be heard speaking out in favor of sexuality education, access to abortion and other reproductive rights. You know that one of the most heart wrenching situations can be a woman facing an unintended pregnancy.

That is why I am working with WV FREE and Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice to mobilize the faith community around the many important reproductive health issues we will be fighting for in 2010, and help train clergy and lay people on how to be more effective spokespeople. On behalf of my colleagues at these organizations, we would like to invite you to be a part of such a training aimed particularly at clergy and religious leaders.

The training will take place on December 10th

at St John's Episcopal Church in Charleston, 1105 Quarrier Street Room 109

from 11:30 to 1:30.

Lunch will be provided

The Rev. Matthew Westfox, Director of Interfaith Outreach and National Coordinator of Field Services for the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice and Margaret Chapman Pomponio will help lead the training and share their experience, but we hope this will be a chance for all of us to learn from each other. The training will include a briefing on the issues before the West Virginia legislature, a discussion of advocacy strategy around those issues and training and discussion of how clergy can best raise their voices in support of the women, men and families we counsel and pastor.

Please let us know if you would like to attend this training by replying to this e-mail, or calling me ( Susan Latimer ) at 304 346-0359 ext. 15.

In addition, if you are interested in hosting a more general training for the members of your congregation and community or receiving more information, please contact Margaret Chapman Pomponio at WV FREE.  e-mail margaret@wvfree.org    or

Phone: (304) 342-9188

These advocacy trainings are fantastic opportunities for our West Virginia clergy community to join together in common cause, and for your organization or parish to educate and mobilize supporters throughout the state. I hope you will be able to join us.

Yours faithfully and for women,

The Rev. Susan Latimer, St. John's Episcopal Church

The Rev. Matthew Westfox, Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice

Mike and Sky,

I thought that attached article was helpful in thinking about the church's role in ministry to first responders.  It is from THE PRESBYTERIAN OUTLOOK, an independent journal in our denomination.  The writer was pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Blacksburg VA and chaplain to the police department there at the time of the Virginia Tech shootings.

H1N1 Community meeting report

Pastors and Friends -

Here are some notes from a recent Kanawha Co Health Dept Task Force H1N1 Meeting

H1n1 swine is different from h1n1 seasonal

Closing school does not seem like a good idea since the kids will congregate somewhere. Kids have no immunity to it. Very few cases in folks 65 and older.

Vaccine is coming in slowly, though Jan.  An er emergency room worked at st marts was the first to die. Because it is coming in slowly, it is a big challenge sorting out the priorities of who will get it first.

Seasonal flu vaccine may be running out, since it is made by the same people as the h1n1 vaccine.

There are preservative free versions of the vaccine.

Basic fliers are available at the h1n1 website.

They would like our help in calming fears

The ' L I T T L E ' Things ~

The ' T ' Things~
cid:1.1313083027@web110512.mail.gq1.yahoo.com
As you might remember, the head of a company survived
9/11 because his son started kindergarten

Another fellow was alive because it was
His turn to bring donuts.

One woman was late because her
Alarm clock didn't go off in time.

One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike
Because of an auto accident.

One of them
Missed his bus.

One spilled food on her clothes and had to take
Time to change.

One's
Car wouldn't start.

One couldn't
Get a taxi.

The one that struck me was the man
Who put on a new pair of shoes that morning,
Took the various means to get to work
But before he got there, he developed
a blister on his foot.

He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid
That is why he is alive today...

Now when I am
Stuck in traffic
 ,
Miss an elevator,
Turn back to answer a ringing telephone ...
All the little things that annoy me.
I think to myself,
This is exactly where

God wants me to be
At this very moment..

Next time your morning seems to be
Going wrong
You can't seem to find the car keys,
You hit every traffic light,
Don't get mad or frustrated;
It May be just that
God is at work watching over you.

May God continue to bless you
With all those annoying little things
And may you remember their possible purpose.

Pass this on to someone else, if you'd like.
There is NO LUCK attached.

Fwd: RCCR Email

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Randall Flanagan <rff7@aol.com>
Date: Tuesday, September 1, 2009
Subject: RCCR Email

Sky

Would you please pass this along to the CARLA Mailing
list.  I will be unable to attend the meeting tomorrow, but Rose Edington
will be.  RCCR is experiencing a cash flow problem caused by the slow down
in the housing market.  Hence, I need to pass this message along.  Thanks
for your help.

Dear Colleagues in Ministry,

As many of you know, the Religious Coalition for Community
Renewal  has provided for those who are homeless in many different
ways.  RCCR has made it possible for low to middle income persons to
purchase a house for themselves and their families.  Through Smith Street
Station, persons in need of a hand up have found a place to live and rebuild a
good and productive life.  Through the Samaritan Inn, men have been
provided a place for healing, freedom from addiction, and personal
change.  Many have gone on to be productive contributing members of
the community.

The sources for funding RCCR are many and varied.  One
of the primary ones is the sale of houses that RCCR has built.  Due to the
downturn in the economy, RCCR is facing a very difficult cash flow
problem.  RCCR must turn now to the very ones who founded this ministry –
the religious community.  To put it simply, we need every congregation who
can to take an offering for the work of RCCR.  It would be great if every
congregation could meet a goal of $500.  We need this money now.  We
are pursuing grants and other funding sources, but this money is needed now for
the ongoing operation of RCCR.

Please do what you can in each of your congregations.
If you would like to have someone come and share about the ministry at RCCR
please contact our executive director, Debra Payne.  We need your help
now.  Whatever you can do will make a big difference for those who are
served by RCCR.

Grace and peace,

Randall F. Flanagan, Christ Church United Methodist

President. RCCR Board of Directors

Sky-
I was wondering if you would be able to send a follow up email to everyone. Here it is..

The Presbytery of WV is doing an underwear drive. We are collecting underwear throughout the presbytery and would love to have your support as well. If you are interested, please bring a bag of children's underwear to the next CARLA meeting. The underwear will go to organizations in the area who provide assistance to families in need of clothing. Thanks for your support!
