By uniting the voices of abused elders, family members and experts from across the nation, An Age for Justice brings the issue of elder abuse out of the shadows and asks us to imagine what we would do if someone we knew was a victim of elder abuse, and we were

in a position to stop it.

To: poleugenia@chasbt.org

Dear Friends and Colleagues, you may have seen in the Gazette the recent article about the new Audio Loop hearing system installed in our sanctuary.  In case you missed it, I have attached it (PDF).  It has made an amazing difference for our folks who are hearing impaired.  Baptist Temple is the first church in the state to have this Loop system.  Several churches have contacted us for further information.  We have decided to host an information meeting to which you and others from your congregation are invited, especially someone with a hearing aid equipped with a T-Coil.  Mr. Andy Jankowski of Audio Loop Solutions, Perrysburg, OH, who installed the system at BT, will be with us to provide information and answer any questions.  You will also have the chance to experience the system, as well.

The gathering will be Wednesday, May 23, at 9:30 a.m. in the sanctuary.

Please respond to this email to let us know if you plan to attend.

Many Thanks, Dennis Johnson

An Invitation to Hear Army Veteran Matthew Pennington - From Jim Lewis

Hello, Sky.

I sure would appreciate it if you would post this on the CARLA network e-mail page, and circulate it among counselors.

Thanks!

Jim
_______________________________________________

An Invitation to Hear Army Veteran Matthew Pennington

After growing up in Maine and Texas, Matthew Pennington joined the Army at age 17, where he served for six years with three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the age of 23, while driving a Humvee, a roadside bomb destroyed his left leg, shattered his right leg, and scorched his lungs. Honorably discharged from the army, he left Walter Reed Army Hospital Center after months of treatment and returned home to Maine.

Medication and therapy did not relieve his anxiety. Perpetually angry, post-traumatic stress drove him deeper into his depression and alcohol, and threatened to end his marriage. But the story does not end there. He has emerged with a message of hope.

Mr. Pennington will be in Charleston to screen a short film in which he plays the role of a returning veteran home from war. It will be followed by his talk and conversation.

When: Thursday, May 24
Where: The Baptist Temple (Morris & Quarrier Streets in Charleston)
Time: 7:00 pm

Issue 3.19

Conflict Ending, Homecomings Continuing

President Obama's surprise announcement this past week that the U.S. is de-escalating in Afghanistan should be a wake up call to the reality that many service people have already returned home, and that more are on the way. That's good news. The bad news? Many of these vets--fully one-third by some estimates--are going to have an especially tough time making the transition from front lines to home front. And congregations are where many will turn for help. Fortunately, there are things that congregations can do to assist, and there are resources to guide them in their efforts. This week, prepare to welcome your service members home by revisiting our updated resource page for congregations wishing to help returning vets and their families.

Gaining and Keeping Effectiveness

Q: Do you have a (preferably short) list of practices that promote effectiveness in congregations?

A: Yup--Dig in!

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers

If you're in the United Methodist Church, you know that the term "metrics" has generated a lot of discussion of late. The good folks at the Lewis Center for Church Leadership have given this a lot of thought and produced a piece that will benefit not only the Methodist church, but any church that wants to do a better job of understanding how to be the church, better.

Director's Blog

"Community" is a term of much discussion in congregations. How one creates it is the subject of even more discussion. A run of resources and stories and a serendipitious phone call last week left the director wondering if we're overthinking this.

"Authors have poured a great deal of time and energy into helping faith communities develop strategies and plans and programs to build community.... Valuable though these resources are, community is not a commodity that is easily analyzed, quantified, and programmatized. Rather, community is rooted within honest, human relationships." Read More

Leon Wurmser, M.D., PhD h.c.

Renowned author

Psychoanalyst and former Clinical Professor of Psychiatry

West Virginia University

"Monotheism:  One God, Many Questions"

Examining the introduction of monotheism (the belief in the existence of one God) in human history

as it is intimately related to the Bible and Judaism.

The Culture Center

Capitol Complex

1900 Kanawha Boulevard, East

Monday, May 14, 2012

Reception following presentation

Sponsored by Mrs. Betty Schoenbaum

Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Hadassah

 Program Co-Chairmen

 Dr. Steven Jubelirer

 Dr. Martin Kommor

Monotheism (the belief that there is but one God) takes its roots in Judaism.  The early Hebrew text speaks of a jealous and angry god.  There is, thus, a strong theme of violence.  In direct contradiction, Monotheism teaches the central importance of justice, love and regard for personal dignity and the value of the individual.

How can we make sense of this deep and troublesome contradiction?  How does it shape our culture and for that matter world events?  Psychoanalysis is a psychology that addresses the central importance of inner conflict.

Midrash is the exposition of the underlying significance of a Bible text, the study of the Jewish law – to expound, to interpret, to deduce and, specifically, to expound the precepts and ethical values of the Scriptures.

Rabbi James Cohn, B'nai Temple Israel:

"With affection for his subject and respect for generations of Jewish inquiry, Dr. Leon Wurmser addresses the tensions in monotheistic religion between primitivism and maturity, between conflict and coexistence, between violence and peace.  Dr. Wurmser sees a microcosm of these tensions in his own discipline of psychoanalysis, which seeks to reconcile these conflicts as the individual grown from unfettered desire toward responsible autonomy.  Listening to Dr. Wurmser, as he expounds his midrash with insight and compassion, is as enjoyable as it is enlightening.

Rabbi Victor H. Urecki, B'nai Jacob Synagogue:

"Dr. Wurmser is an internationally-known psychoanalyst and thinker.  With Dr. Wurmser, Hadassah is bringing to Charleston a scholar who offers wisdom and insight into complex ideas on a level that will appeal to all.  To have someone of his depth and knowledge in our community is a rare opportunity to understand more about Judaism's religious and cultural development.  Please do not miss this outstanding event!"
