The Lay Academy of Religion

First Presbyterian Church

16 Leon Sullivan Way, Charleston, WV

Invites you to study

Religion & Science

We will launch this series of studies with the book  PROOF OF HEAVEN  by Eben

Alexander, MD.  Dr. Alexander is a prominent neurologist, or brain surgeon, who

contracted meningitis and was in a coma for seven days.  While his brain cells were

clinically dead, his consciousness lived.  He recovered and reports his Near Death

Experience as his journey out of his body to heaven where he discovers love, beauty, and

life as never before.  His knowledge of God, himself, and the meaning of life are forever

changed.  As a scientist and doctor of medicine, how does he relate his commitment to

Science with his newly discovered spiritual reality?

To explore these questions with us, Dr. Robert Anderson will be our kick-off speaker on

Sunday, October 6 at 4:00pm, meeting in the Sanctuary.   Save this date and plan to join

our new series of programs and studies on Religion and Science.  Dr. Anderson brings a

lifetime of service in health care and is imminently qualified to share his knowledge of Near

Death Experiences and what they teach us about both Religion and Science.

To get started, plan to read PROOF OF HEAVEN.  This book is available in the church

office ($8.50).  You may remember Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross spoke in our sanctuary

some years ago on this same subject, Near Death Experiences, sponsored by the Kanawha

Pastoral Counseling Center.   Dr. Kübler-Ross was a pioneer in her research and study of

Near Death Experiences among patients of all ages, including children.  It is appropriate

that we continue her legacy and investigate how researchers over the years have labored

to learn how consciousness of spiritual reality and physical, bodily functions are closely

interrelated.  As we continue our studies our goal will be to discover for ourselves how

Religion and Science, while sometimes or often in tension, are not enemies but friends and

partners in this creation which the Bible assures us is intrinsically good.  Plan to join us.

If you have questions or suggestions to support and promote our study of Religion and

Science, please contact Bob Newman (304-345-0225; robertnewman@suddenlink.net).
