"I do not say that I have discovered the best philosophy," Spinoza once said.  "Only that I have found the true one."

 

Spinoza, perhaps more than any other thinker, had the courage to accept, and implement, the consequences of his beliefs.  He asked what was true, and then organized his life to accommodate the truth.

 

Why did Einstein say that if he believed in any God, it was the God of Spinoza? Why is this seventeenth-century lens-maker considered the father of modern science, the historical study of the Bible, and psychology?

 

We'll explore these questions in a three-session miniseries on Spinoza at Temple Israel on three consecutive Wednesday nights from 7:00 to 8:30:

November 3

November 10

 

Everyone is invited. Handouts and website resources will be provided.  No textbook needs to be secured for the course, reservations are not required, and there is no fee.

 

The ideas we discuss will be difficult, to be sure; but as Spinoza said, "All good things are as difficult as they are rare."

The attraction of Spinoza's philosophy to late eighteenth-century Europeans was that it provided an alternative to materialism, atheism, and deism. Three of Spinoza's ideas strongly appealed to them:

• the unity of all that exists;
• the regularity of all that happens; and
• the identity of spirit and nature.

The DOVE (Domestic Violence Elimination) Committee and the YWCA Resolve Family Abuse Program will hold an Interfaith Domestic Violence Vigil in memory of victims and in honor of survivors on October 5, 6:30 pm at Macy's Court at Charleston Town Center Mall.  Please join us!

Healing Hearts through Harmony is the theme of this annual event held during October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  The program will include music by Betty King from the First Presbyterian Church of St. Albans; Josh Barrett of B'Nai Israel, and the Tiny Steps Ordered by the Lord children's dance choir from New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church.  Poetry, sacred readings, interfaith prayer; a litany of hope; and a talk by a domestic violence survivor/advocate also will be included.

The DOVE Committee is an interfaith community group comprised of people from the various communities of faith working to end family violence through prevention and education awareness.  The YWCA Resolve Family Abuse Program is the licensed domestic violence program serving Kanawha, Clay and Boone Counties.  YWCA Resolve program provides emergency shelter, legal advocacy, empowerment counseling, individual counseling, support groups, and Batterers' Intervention and Prevention Programs.  They can be reached at 340-3573.

Advocates and Allies,

 

Following the Annual Purple Ribbon Award ceremony, WVCADV will host our annual statewide training. 

This training scheduled for Friday, October 8, 2010, will feature Tony Porter of "A Call To Men".  Tony will be conducting a training to engage men and confront hurtful gender norms in order to end violence against women. This training will be held at the Charleston Marriott, the training is free of charge, and a working lunch will be provided.

 

Prior to the training, on the evening of October 7^th, WVCADV will be hosting the Purple Ribbon Awards to honor advocates for domestic violence victims in West Virginia (Mr. Porter is the Keynote Speaker). You are welcome to attend that in addition to the training on the 8^th, and may contact Amy Landers at our office for questions about the Purple Ribbon Awards.

 

Tony Porter has the ability to motivate, encourage, challenge and instill hope in both men and women to listen up, speak out and stand up for respect and equality in relationships. He is in the business of shifting social norms and building partnerships for influencing change in attitudes men have for women. He addresses an issue that impacts people across all social lines, and is interested in talking about practical steps that men can take to support women in their lives, and support other men to do the same.
